Thickest nacre

Freshwater pearls have the thickest nacre (the glossy organic material from which pearls are made) of all pearls. This makes them the most durable pearls, and the best for wearing everyday.

About freshwater pearls

Grown in Zhuji, China

The freshwater pearl capital of the world. Our partner farms are family-run operations we visit and buy from directly.

About our sourcing

Hand-knotted on PE fiber

Pearls knotted on silk need to be re-strung every 2-3 years. PE fiber looks like silk but lasts for decades.

Frequently asked questions

What is freshwater cultured pearl jewelry?

Jewellery made with pearls grown in freshwater mussels on farms, where a technician starts the pearl and the mussel builds it from nacre. They are real pearls, grown from nacre by the mussel; cultured means farm-grown, not imitation.

How is freshwater pearl jewelry different from akoya?

Akoya pearls grow in saltwater oysters around a shell bead, one or two per animal, and are typically rounder with a sharper luster at the same size. Ordinary freshwater pearls grow many to a mussel with no bead, so they are solid nacre and cost a fraction of the price. Our comparison article covers where each wins.

Do you sell matching sets?

Not as boxed sets, but the necklaces, earrings and bracelets use the same sorted pearls at the same stated sizes, so pieces chosen at one size match.

How are your pearls graded?

On our own published scale for luster, surface, shape and matching, shown on every product page, because there is no industry-standard pearl grade. The scale and what each step means are on the how-we-grade page.

What does the certificate cover?

It records the listed specifications of the piece: pearl type, size, grade, shape and color. It is our claim in writing and makes it enforceable; it is not an independent appraisal.

Freshwater pearl jewelry: what to know before you buy

Everything in this collection is cultured freshwater pearl jewelry bought at the farm, graded in-house and sold without a store between you and the pond. Roughly 7 in 10 strands offered to us are rejected at sorting, round and near-round strands are matched within 0.9 mm, and every piece ships with a Certificate of Authenticity that records its listed specifications. The sections below cover the questions people ask before buying any pearl jewellery, with links to the collection that answers each.

Freshwater cultured pearl jewelry: what the words mean

Freshwater says where the pearl grew: in a mussel, in a pond, rather than in an oyster at sea. Cultured says a farmer started it. Together they describe nearly every real pearl sold today at this price, and they are not a lesser category: an ordinary freshwater pearl is solid nacre all the way through, with no shell bead inside, and an Edison carries 2 mm or more of nacre over a small bead, which is why neither has anything to wear thin. The difference between cultured, natural and imitation is in are freshwater pearls real?; how freshwater compares with akoya, including where akoya wins, is in freshwater versus akoya.

Pearl necklaces

Single strands in three pearl sizes, 3.5–4 mm, 7.5–8 mm and 10.5–11 mm, each in Gem Grade and High Grade and in four lengths from the 16 inch choker to the 24 inch opera, hand-knotted on PE fiber. The necklace collection explains lengths, sizes and clasps in detail.

Pearl earrings

Studs, matched as pairs for size, color and luster, in sterling silver and gold-toned settings. We do not carry drops or hoops. See pearl earrings for sizes in millimetres.

Pearl bracelets

Single strands in the same three sizes as our necklaces, from a dainty 3.5–4 mm to a bold 10.5–11 mm, in five lengths from 6 to 8 inches. The bracelet collection has the wrist measurement method and a size table.

Freshwater pearl jewelry sets

We do not sell boxed sets, but every collection uses the same sorted pearls at the same stated sizes, so a 7.5–8 mm strand, a 7.5–8 mm bracelet and a 7–8 mm stud match as a freshwater pearl set. Choose the necklace first, then match the size on the other two pages.

Colors

White, cream, peach and pink, and purple are the colors freshwater pearls grow in. Our white pearls carry a rose overtone, and we also carry pink, purple and champagne gold strands and bracelets, all natural body colors, never dyed or treated. Black freshwater pearls are always dyed or irradiated, and a deep, uniform gold on an ordinary freshwater pearl usually is too. Our gold pieces are Edison pearls in their natural color, never dyed, and each product page says so. See pearl colors explained.

Real pearl jewelry: how to check

Every piece ships with a Certificate of Authenticity that records the listed size, grade, shape and color. It makes our claim enforceable, and it is only as good as the grading behind it, which we publish on how we grade. It is not an independent appraisal. We do not use "AAA" except to point out that no industry-standard pearl grading scale exists. The home tests are in how to tell if pearls are real, and freshwater pearls for sale anywhere should pass them.
