FAQ

Shipping

How much does shipping cost?

Nothing. Shipping is free on every order — no minimum, no code. Every shipment is insured in transit at no extra cost, because sending pearls uninsured would be a strange way to save money.

Is my order insured?

Yes, fully, door to door. If a package is lost or arrives damaged, email us and we'll replace the piece or refund you — you won't be asked to fight a carrier over a claim. That's our job.

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2-3 business days. Every strand is inspected and knotted by hand before it goes out, so when we're slammed it can take a day or two longer — if it will, we'll tell you rather than leave you guessing.

How can I track my order?

The moment your order ships you'll get an email with the tracking number. If tracking hasn't moved for a few days, don't sit on it — write to us and we'll chase the carrier.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. Canada usually takes 1-2 weeks; most other countries 2-3. One honest caveat: your country may charge duties or import taxes on arrival, and those are yours — we have no way to prepay or predict them.

What does the packaging look like?

Every piece arrives in our gift box with the pearls secured flat, the way they should be stored. There's no invoice with prices inside, so it can go straight from the mailbox to the person it's for.

Returns & refunds

What is your return policy?

60 days from delivery, on every order. If the pearls aren't what you hoped, send them back — worn once to try on is fine. We'd rather take a return than have you keep something you don't love.

Is return shipping free?

Yes. We send you a prepaid, insured label; you drop the box off. A return should not cost you money to find out something wasn't right.

How do I start a return?

Email hi@freshwaterpearls.com with your order number and the word return — that's genuinely all we need. The label arrives within a business day.

When will I get my refund?

We refund to your original payment method as soon as the return is scanned back to us in transit — not when it lands on our desk. Banks typically post it within 3-5 business days.

Can I exchange instead of returning?

Of course. Tell us what you'd like instead — a different length, a different metal — and we'll ship it as soon as your return is on its way. Any price difference gets settled in whichever direction it goes.

Warranty

What does the warranty cover?

Two years, on every piece, against anything that fails as jewelry: a clasp that stops closing, a strand that gives at the knot, a stud post that loosens. If it broke doing its job, it's on us.

What isn't covered?

Wear and accidents: pearls dulled by perfume or chlorine, a strand caught on a coat zip, a lost earring. Nacre worn thin by years of daily wear is a pearl doing what pearls do, not a defect. We'll always tell you plainly which side of the line something falls on.

How do I make a claim?

Email hi@freshwaterpearls.com with your order number and a photo of the problem. No forms, no receipts to dig up — your order number is your proof of purchase. We repair where we can and replace where we can't.

Do you restring necklaces?

Yes, and a strand worn weekly should be restrung every couple of years — silk stretches, that's physics, not a flaw. Write to us and we'll quote it; it costs less than you'd think.

Caring for your pearls

How should I care for my pearls?

Last on, first off. Perfume, hairspray and sunscreen go on before your pearls; the pearls come off before anything else at night. After wearing, a quick wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth removes skin oils — that's the entire routine.

How should I store them?

Flat, on their own, in the pouch or box they came in. Two things ruin stored pearls: harder gemstones scratching them in a shared jewelry box, and strands hung on hooks stretching their silk. Avoid both and they'll outlast you.

Can I shower or swim in them?

No. Chlorine and soap etch nacre, and heat dries it out. Pearls are an organic gem — treat them like your skin, not like metal.

Why do my pearls look different from the photos?

Because no two freshwater pearls are alike. Yours will differ slightly in tone and surface from the pair on the product page — that's the nature of a gem grown by a living mussel, and it's how you know they're real.

Do pearls really improve with wearing?

Genuinely, yes. Light contact with skin keeps nacre from drying out, which is why the best-kept pearls are usually the most-worn ones. The worst thing you can do to a pearl is leave it in a safe for a decade.

Ordering & payment

What payment methods do you accept?

All major cards, plus Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. Every payment runs through Shopify's checkout — we never see or store your card details.

Can I change or cancel my order?

If it hasn't shipped, yes — email us right away with your order number and what you'd like changed. Once it's with the carrier we can't pull it back, but the 60-day return policy has you covered either way.

Do you offer gift wrapping?

Every order arrives gift-boxed as standard, with no prices anywhere inside the package. If it's a gift, add a note at checkout and we'll include it written out.

Are your prices really what pearls should cost?

Yes — that's the point of the business. We buy directly from the farm, grade in-house against a published scale, and skip the four middlemen a mall jeweler pays. Same pearls, without the markup theater.

I'm not sure which piece to choose. Can you help?

That's what we're here for. Email us with the occasion, budget and who it's for, or book a virtual appointment — we'll give you a straight recommendation, including telling you when the cheaper option is the right one.
