Every pearl we sell spent years inside a living mussel in a pond in Zhuji, China, before it reached a strand. Here is the whole process, told straight — including the part of the industry's history most pearl sellers leave out.
Step one: the graft
A freshwater pearl starts when a technician makes a small incision in a mussel's mantle — the fleshy organ lining its shell — and inserts a tiny piece of mantle tissue from a donor mussel. No bead, no nucleus. The mussel responds by forming a pearl sac around the graft and coating it with nacre, the same crystalline material it uses to line its own shell.
How many grafts go into one mussel matters more than almost anything else in the process. Intensive operations insert 30–50 pieces of tissue into a single animal, which stresses the mussel and produces a large volume of small, low-grade pearls. Farms working at 10–20 grafts or fewer get healthier mussels and better pearls from fewer animals. The farms we buy from work at the lower end.
Step two: years in the water
The mussel goes back into open water — suspended from lines or nets in a freshwater pond — and does the slow part. Layer by layer, it deposits nacre around each graft. A typical freshwater pearl spends two to five years growing; longer grow-outs of four to six years build thicker nacre and higher luster, which is why patient farms produce better pearls from the same number of animals.
Through that entire period, the mussel is a filter feeder: it eats by straining plankton and particles out of the water around it, continuously, for years. Hold that fact — it's about to become complicated.
Step three: harvest and sorting
At harvest, the mussel is opened and the pearls are removed — a freshwater mussel yields many pearls at once, which is a large part of why freshwater pearls cost less than saltwater ones. Then comes the brutal arithmetic of sorting: of everything harvested, only a small fraction is gem-quality. The rest — off-colour, weak-lustered, badly blemished — goes to lower uses. The part most pearl sellers leave out
Freshwater pearl farming has a documented pollution history, and you should know it. To boost the plankton their mussels feed on, many farms fertilised their ponds — with manure or chemical fertiliser. The result was eutrophication: algal blooms, oxygen crashes, dead water. In China's main freshwater pearl regions the problem became severe enough that authorities forced farm closures and mandated cleaner methods.
This matters because it breaks the industry's favourite talking point. "Mussels clean the water" is only true of farms that are not simultaneously dosing that water with nutrients. The claim is conditional — and the condition is the whole story.
What the better farms do now, and what we look for in ours: lower stocking density (fewer mussels per acre means less waste loading and better water circulation), fewer grafts per mussel, and longer grow-outs that take more value from fewer animals. Why this process produces a different kind of pearl
Because the graft is tissue rather than a bead, the finished freshwater pearl is solid nacre all the way through — there is no core to wear through, which is the structural argument for freshwater covered in our comparison with akoya. And because one mussel grows many pearls in a pond rather than one or two in an ocean lease, the price of the finished strand reflects farming economics, not corner-cutting.
